My 6¢: Joico has a strong reputation for delivering quality products that deliver. Unfortunately for me Intense Hydrator is not one of them. I tried the patience approach with this product; I also attempted the intermittent approach, i.e. coming back to it ever so often throughout my hair stretch, but the reality is that Intense Hydrator doesn’t do much for my hair. For an “Intense Hydrator” I’m expecting just that – intense moisture, ridiculous slip and for the price the results should be nothing short of orgasmic. Sadly, when I use this product I don’t get that moisturized feel, neither in terms of slip or softness. The results are inconsistent and largely depend on when along my stretch the product is used. If my hair is newly relaxed, I can expect little detangling and little moisturization. If my hair is past the 4 -6 week mark, I can expect no detangling properties and even less moisturization.
The scent is ok, a little perfumy (as with most Joico products) but not overpowering. It’s not the greatest of scents but I can overlook that. In terms of consistency, it is not a thick product. It reminds me of a light body lotion from Bath & Body Works. If you’re not careful it will slide off of your hands when applying.
My other beef with this product is that it is recommended for use after the Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor. The reconstructor is a medium protein so it should be followed with a moisturizing conditioner to provide moisture balance and help soften the hair. When I use this after the reconstructor, I really feel like I’m wasting my time because I always have to follow up with something more moisturizing. The problem seems to be that even though this product is advertised as a hydrator it’s protein-laden. It contains their signature Quadramine Complex which is a blend of 19 proteins. So essentially I’m trying to soften and moisturize protein with protein…unlikely. This is disappointing on two fronts: 1) The product claims (i.e. soft, shiny, hydrated, manageable hair) are not justified at least not when it comes to my hair and 2) this is a higher end salon product. For the price my hair (and pocket) demands better.
On the positive side, this product is PH balanced so it should do the same thing for you as a ACV rinse i.e. lay down the cuticle to promote shine and smoothness. Personally I haven’t experienced either from this product but I’m just laying out the facts.
I don’t think I have to tell you I won’t be replacing this product, but in case there was any uncertainties let me tell you anyway – I won’t be replacing this product. It will possibly work better on someone with lighter textured hair but for my Type 4 hair it does little. I like consistency in a product and this doesn’t deliver. That’s too bad, I really like its sister product – K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor.
