The Big Chop

When I went natural I had all intentions of chronicling my journey here.  Fast forward some 7 months and well long story short life got in the way and I never did get around to it.  So here goes.

Day after big chop

My big chop was done on July 14, 2012 after 7 months of transitioning.  I had planned to wait until a year or so of transitioning before big chopping but the two textures were driving me crazy.  I had resorted to braids to help with the transition, but I think I’m allergic to synthetic hair and not even pre-soaking in vinegar was relieving my scalp of the itching.

After the second set of braids I’d had enough and made a rather spontaneous decision to free myself of the distress.   I was ready to big chop….or so I thought.  After “making” the decision and scheduling my appointment with my stylist, I went through a series of “panic” sessions.  I’d stand in front of the mirror trying to visualize a TWA.  I’d be lying if I said it was an easy process for me because I’d never worn short hair since being a toddler.  I went to my stylist accompanied by my hubbie and she proceeded to “chop”.  Braid by braid she snipped and snipped until all the relaxed ends were removed.  I sat in front of the mirror for the entire time so I could see my hair being transformed.  As the hair fell to the floor and the shape of my TWA began to emerge I felt at peace with my decision.  I had paniced during the week prior for no reason.  This TWA-thing wasn’t so bad! In fact dare I say I kinda liked it.   I was happy!

  1. Congratulations! I’m sure you are loving your new look. I big chopped May 2012 and had many reservations and panic attacks but survived the initial cut. My hair thrived and so will your hair!

    • Thanks Norma. I have grown to love my TWA.

  2. Omg. I didn’t know you bc’d. You look wonderful. I love your TWA. Beautiful pic. How’d your hubby feel about the bc?

    • Thanks LaQT. Hubby actually encouraged me to go natural. He was really supportive throughout the whole process.
